Construction Management

Short-Term Planning

Convert the live CPM into look-aheads and work-front priorities the field can use this week and next, without creating a second schedule.

C02 — The problem

The technical problem

Sites often run a whiteboard sequence that has no relationship to the CPM. Crews are productive on work that is not driving completion, while the critical path waits on access or information.

Short-Term Planning is construction-management work: pull near-term activities from the live programme, expose constraints, and set work-front priorities for the coming weeks. It is not recovery of the whole remaining programme and not period progress measurement for the controls report.

C03 — Engagement

When this capability is needed

  1. 01
    Weekly / look-ahead cycle

The field needs a plan that still honours the CPM.

  2. 02
    Work-front congestion

Several crews and only some available work.

  3. 03
    After an update

Remaining logic changed and the site diary has not.

  4. 04
    Interface weeks

Handovers in the near term will move the path if they slip.

C04 — Scope / method

How the work is approached

Near-term look-aheads, work-front availability, and constraint removal for a defined window (typically 2–6 weeks). Whole-project recovery and commissioning-closeout programmes are separate capabilities.

  1. 01
    Slice the live CPM

Activities inside the look-ahead window, including predecessors that gate them.

  2. 02
    Confirm work-front availability

Access, information, materials, and permits as constraints.

  3. 03
    Prioritise against the driving path

Near-term work that protects completion, not only busy work.

  4. 04
    Issue the look-ahead

A plan the field meeting can follow.

  5. 05
    Feed constraints back

Items the planner and commercial team must act on.

C05 — Outputs

Typical deliverables

Typical deliverables
Output What it contains
Look-ahead schedule Near-term activities from the live CPM.
Work-front / constraint list What is available and what is blocking.
Weekly priority note What must happen this cycle to protect the path.
Feedback to the update Constraints that belong in the programme file.

C06 — Decision value

What this work is used to decide

Which near-term work to resource, which constraints to escalate, and whether the site plan still matches the live path. It does not re-baseline the project.

C10 — Boundaries

Important distinctions

Value Construction does not claim the contractor’s statutory safety or quality duty. Short-term planning coordinates sequence against the live programme.
